A few blocks away from Baltimore's famous Inner Harbor lies Oriole Park at Camden Yards. This ideally located ballpark with its classically inspired design and downtown setting has been a top attraction in Baltimore since the first pitch was thrown in the 1992 season opener. A generation of Baltimore baseball fans have grown up with Camden Yards and it has welcomed millions of out of town visitors over the years. The enduring appeal of Camden Yards more than 15 years after its opening is a testament to the planners and designers of the ballpark. While most people come to watch the O's take on their latest opponent, quite a few follow their home team to Camden Yards as it is one of the top sports travel destinations in baseball. Beyond die hard baseball fans, many people simply enjoy an afternoon at Camden Yards. There are children's activities abound, great food that goes far beyond the hot dog, monuments to Baltimore's proud baseball history, and some of the best views of the city. Due to its downtown location a good number of complimentary activities and attractions have developed over the years to enhance one's visit to Camden Yards. The adjacent Sports Legends Museum, in the renovated Camden Station, is a sports fans dream come true offering exhibits and artifacts of local sports history. Affiliated with the Sports Legends Museum is the Babe Ruth Birthplace and Museum which is dedicated to telling the story of the greatest baseball player of all time. Immediately to the North of the park you can find several sports themed bars and restaurants that cater specifically to the patrons of Camden Yards. A few blocks to the East in the Inner Harbor's Power Plant building, a sports junkie's paradise takes form in the guise of the ESPN Zone, featuring games, the ultimate sports bar, and a full service restaurant. Even with so many things to do outside the gates, the main attraction remains the park itself. A pregame exploration will reveal a few hidden surprises scattered throughout the park. Beginning in Eutaw Street outside of the Eli Jacobs flag court, the pavement is dotted with baseball shaped markers documenting home runs which have landed outside of the park. Of note is the plaque on the side of the B&O Warehouse marking the spot of the only ball to hit the building on the fly (Ken Griffey Jr., 1993 Home Run Derby). In front of the South side entrance lies a monument to World War II veterans rescued from the original facade of Memorial Stadium, the previous home of the Orioles. There are many other notable points of interest throughout the park, try looking for them on your next visit. Camden Yards is highly accessible, located just off of I-95 with ample on site and nearby parking available. The MTA Light Rail service also has two stops next to Camden Yards, making the Light Rail a very popular choice for traveling to the ballpark. Of course the best way to get to the park is to take a short walk from your downtown hotel. |
